How to Go from Viñales to Trinidad – [6 ways to travel in 2026]

Traveling from Viñales to Trinidad is a long old overland journeys in Cuba, probably the longest that many will make. Trinidad is usually used as a base, and while the route looks manageable on a map, the reality is that public transport options don’t work well for a smooth transfer.  The main problem on this route is Viazul. There’s no direct bus, and getting there by public transport means routing via Havana with timetables that don’t connect. In practice, this almost always forces an overnight stay in Havana and turns a single travel day into two.  Here’s my guide on going between Viñales and Trinidad.

The good news is that there is one option that makes this route straightforward. In this guide, I’ll walk through what actually works, what technically exists but rarely makes sense, and how to choose the option that fits your time, budget, and patience level.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS

Viñales is small and relaxed, but once you leave the valley transport options drop off quickly. This isn’t a route you want to improvise on the day, (it won’t work, I’m telling you now).  Trinidad is well worth staying put for a few nights. If you’re making the effort to get there, it’s worth arriving with enough time to enjoy the old town, nearby beaches, and the Escambray Mountains rather than treating it as a quick stop.  Check out my guide to Trinidad and what’s to do here.

Where Is Trinidad?

Trinidad is located on Cuba’s south-central coast in Sancti Spíritus Province, between the Caribbean Sea and the Escambray Mountains. It’s one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the country, known for its cobbled streets, colourful houses, and relaxed pace.  Beyond the historic centre, Trinidad is well placed for exploring beaches like Playa Ancón and waterfalls and hiking routes in the surrounding National Park and mountains. Its location is part of the appeal, but it’s also why getting there from western Cuba takes more planning than many travelers expect.

How to Go from Viñales to Trinidad – Transport Options

There are only a handful of realistic ways to travel from Viñales to Trinidad. Some exist in theory but fall apart once you look at the timetables, while one option stands out as the clear, no-nonsense solution.

1. Taxi from Viñales to Trinidad

Taking a taxi is possible and works in much the same way as hiring a private driver, but it’s usually arranged locally and requires negotiation. Payment is in cash, and some Spanish is helpful when agreeing on price and timing.

The drive takes around six and a half hours if you go straight through without stops. While taxis can handle a direct transfer, they’re less likely to accommodate sightseeing stops on a route this long unless you negotiate hard in advance.  Your problem is going to be finding a taxi driver who wants to do this route.  They’ll need to figure out getting fuel to return (read my guide to fuel shortages in Cuba to understand more), and they’ll also want a fare to return with to make it worth their while.

Most travelers looking to travel this route find a pre-arranged private driver easier and more predictable.

2. Take a Private Driver (with sightseeing en route)

A private driver is both the fastest and easiest way to get from Viñales to Trinidad. Going straight through, the journey takes around six and a half hours, and you’ll be picked up directly from your accommodation in Viñales and dropped exactly where you’re staying in Trinidad.  Read my guide to private drivers in Cuba to see how this works in reality.

The biggest advantage of this transport option is flexibility. On a route this long, breaking up the journey makes a huge difference. Some fabulous sightseeing stops on this route include:

Taking a private driver and arranging these sight seeing stops en route really helps to maximize your time in Cuba.  You can check out options and prices here.  Pre-arranging a private driver means a fixed price, defined stops, and far less negotiation on the day. For most travelers, this is a no-brainer and the best overall option.

3. Colectivo from Viñales to Trinidad

Colectivos are technically the cheapest option, but they’re unreliable on this route. It’s not a journey locals commonly make end to end, which means shared taxis are rare.  You can read my guide to colectivos in Cuba here.

If one does exist, it’s usually arranged through a casa particular and often relies on finding other travelers heading the same way. Timing and availability aren’t guaranteed, so this isn’t something to build a tight itinerary around.  Be sure to check whether you’re paying per seat or for the entire car before you shake on a price.

4. Bus from Viñales to Trinidad (Viazul)

There is no direct Viazul bus from Viñales to Trinidad.

To attempt this journey by bus, you will need to travel from Viñales to Havana and then from Havana to Trinidad.

The Viñales to Havana bus only runs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, arriving in Havana at 19:20.

The Havana to Trinidad bus only runs on Tuesday and Saturday, departing at 13:50 and 15:00.

The Viazul Bus network can be useful (read my guide to it here), but not in this instance, because these schedules don’t line up, an overnight stay in Havana is unavoidable. While this is technically possible, it turns a single journey into a multi-day process and is impractical for most travelers.

5. Train from Viñales to Trinidad

Trains are not a realistic option for this route. Viñales is not connected by rail.  For Viñales to Trinidad, trains can be ruled out entirely.

6. Rent a Car and Drive from Viñales to Trinidad

Driving yourself is possible, but it comes with the usual Cuba caveats. Rental cars are expensive, fuel availability can be unpredictable, and this is a very long day behind the wheel.  Check out my guide to rental cars in Cuba in 2026, and take special note of where the gas stations for rental cars are (they are special stations, not the regular ones).

If you already have a rental car and are comfortable driving in Cuba, the route is manageable. Otherwise, a private driver offers the same door-to-door convenience with far less stress.

Final Thoughts: What’s the Best Way to Go from Viñales to Trinidad?

This is one route where the limitations of Cuban public transport really show up. While buses and colectivos technically exist, neither works well for a smooth journey.  If you want to keep your itinerary intact and avoid losing days to awkward connections, a private driver is easily the best option. It’s faster, easier, and far less stressful — and it turns a long transfer into a manageable, even enjoyable, part of your trip.
