How to Go from Havana to Trinidad [6 Ways to Travel in 2026]

Traveling from Havana to Trinidad looks straightforward on a map, but in Cuba, the reality depends heavily on timing, transport schedules, and how much patience you have.  Trinidad is one of Cuba’s most atmospheric cities — its beautifully preserved colonial old town alone makes it one of the country’s highlights — yet plenty of travelers struggle with this route because the most obvious option (the bus) doesn’t run daily.  The good news? You do have several realistic ways to make this journey work. Some are fast and comfortable, others are cheaper but inflexible, and one option is often the cleanest solution if you’re short on time.  My guide covers the realistic ways to travel from Havana to Trinidad, ranked from easiest to most budget-friendly.

Before leaving Havana, it’s worth giving the capital the time it deserves — it’s not just a gateway city. If you’re still planning your stay, this guide covers the best things to do in Havana.  Once you reach Trinidad, you’ll want a plan there too. My guide covers what to see and do once you arrive:

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS

Where Is Trinidad?

Trinidad lies on the south-central coast, in Sancti Spíritus Province, between the Caribbean Sea and the Escambray Mountains. The journey between the two cuts across a large stretch of inland Cuba rather than following the coast, as this is where the main roads are.

How to Go from Havana to Trinidad – Transport Options

In this guide on how to go from Havana to Trinidad, I’ll cover the fastest, easiest, and cheapest ways to travel — and which options sound fine in theory but don’t always work well in practice.

1. Taxi from Havana to Trinidad

Taking a taxi is the simplest and most direct way to get from Havana to Trinidad. There’s no timetable to worry about, no waiting around at bus stations, and no sharing space with strangers unless you choose to.  The drive usually takes five hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. You’ll be collected directly from your casa particular or hotel in Havana and dropped off at your accommodation in Trinidad.

This option works best if you’re traveling as a couple, family, or small group and want door-to-door convenience. If you’re traveling solo, it’s usually the most expensive way to make the journey.  Your casa particular owner will be able to arrange a taxi for you, or you can find them outside the big hotels in Old Havana, or at the Viazul Bus station.  Just make sure you agree on a price for the entire car, not per seat.

2. Take a Private Driver (with Sightseeing En Route)

A private driver is similar to a taxi, but with the flexibility to stop along the way for sightseeing, meals, or short breaks.  This is ideal if you don’t want to rush either city, are traveling with family, or want to turn a long travel day into part of the experience rather than something to endure.  I recommend using daytrip.com (I wrote about them here).  You can prebook your itinerary, get a fixed price for it, and also decide where you want to stop off along the way.  It’s a great way to get more out of your trip to Cuba.

Daytrip.com is a great option – and I recommend you take a look at the stops enroute that they recommend, even if you don’t use them, it’s great food for thought on the best places to visit!  Check them out here.

3. Colectivo from Havana to Trinidad

Colectivos (shared taxis) are a relatively common option on this route, but they’re still not guaranteed.  They’re usually arranged:

You’ll normally pay per seat, and departures only happen once the car fills. If you want to leave early, expect to pay for empty seats or negotiate.  We first did this traveling from Matanzas to Havana (read about that here)

Colectivos can be good value if you’re flexible with timing, but it’s not something to rely on for a tight itinerary. You can read more about colectivos in my guide here.

5. Viazul Bus from Havana to Trinidad

On paper, Viazul looks like the obvious budget option. In reality, the timetable is the main issue as the Viazul bus from Havana to Trinidad only runs on Tuesday and Saturday.  Plus

  • It departs in the afternoon (which is why I include it in itineraries when you’re trying to cram in as much of Cuba as you can in a short space of time – read them here.

And

  • Requires check-in one hour before departure

The Viazul Bus also stops at several destinations along the way (it’s a great option for getting to Playa Giron and diving the Bay of Pigs, for instance), but it does make it a long travel day. If you want to understand how Viazul works in practice — booking, luggage, and what to expect — my guide explains it clearly.

5. Train from Havana to Trinidad

Trains exist in Cuba, but when going from Havana to Trinidad, this is not practical, as there is no train connection between Havana and Trinidad.  Trinidad has not been connected to the national rail network since the early 1990s. If you’re interested in trains in Cuba more generally, here’s my full guide.

6. Rent a Car and Drive from Havana to Trinidad

Driving yourself from Havana to Trinidad is possible, but it’s rarely the easiest option in Cuba.  Rental cars are expensive, fuel is usually available at specific tourist gas stations, and shortages can occur — especially during power outages. That said, if you already have a rental car and are confident driving in Cuba, the route itself is manageable and gives you complete freedom.  It is much more usual in Cuba to rent a car AND a driver.  It tends to offer better value with far less stress. Final Thoughts: What’s the Best Way to Go from Havana to Trinidad?

If you want the simplest and most reliable option to go from Havana to Trinidad, take a private transfer or hire a private driver.  If you’re traveling independently on a tight budget, Viazul can work — but only if the timing aligns perfectly with your itinerary, so alternatively get into a colectivo.  It might seem like a long time to go from Havana to Trinidad, but that’s the way it works in Cuba: you plan your route on “time between”, not “distance between”.  You just need to choose the option that fits your time, patience level, and travel style — and avoid forcing Cuban transport to do something it’s not great at.
