Visiting Cuba in April:  Events, Activities, and Weather

April in Cuba is right at the end of the peak time to visit Cuba.   While you might find that the temperatures are starting to rise, it’s not like the high temperatures of summer.  This is the last month of Cuba’s high season and you may see prices starting to fall for accommodation, although it depends on when Easter falls during the year that you visit (as that is high season for sure).  There are usually several cultural events in Cuba’s capital, Havana too.  Here’s what to expect and what there is to do in Cuba in April.

Some say that April is the shoulder season in Cuba, and that may be true towards the end of the month, when you could expect a little more rain, however, it depends on when Easter falls during the year as to whether prices come down or not.  You’re likely to see humidity rising at the end of the month as the rainy season begins. Here’s what to do in Cuba in April.

Top Tours and Activities to Book during April

This is a great month to head to some of Cuba’s National Parks – crowds are lower, and with the lower humidity, it’s a super time to visit.

The most famous of Cuba’s National Parks and reserves is the Vinales Valley, about 3 hours from Havana, it’s a popular day trip from Havana, or you can read more about visiting Vinales here.

Think also about visiting the Ciénaga de Zapata National Park just two hours to the south of Havana and on the Zapata Peninsula.  While there are great wildlife spotting opportunities within the forests and wetlands of the National Park, for me, it’s the underwater world that is a fabulous place to explore in Cuba in April.  And that means the Bay of Pigs, where you can snorkel or dive.  Read about diving in the Bay of Pigs here.

What is there to see in Cuba in April?

Cuba is a secular country, but there are many Cuban Catholics and that makes Easter a good time to visit.  Easter usually falls somewhere between the end of March and mid-April.

If Easter falls during April, then you should head to Trinidad.  This city has a Catholic culture, and that means that you’ll get to see some cultural processions such as the Nocturnal Way of the Cross Procession, held on Good Friday.  This procession sees a cross paraded through the streets of this colonial-era city. Make the most of your time in Trinidad and head to the Topes de Collantes National Park (it’s an easy day trip from Trinidad).

You might also find pilgrimages taking place in Cienfuegos and Camaguey – and Good Friday and Palm Sunday are National Holidays, so expect to see events on these days.  In Havana, on Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross begins at Havana Cathedral and a procession goes through the streets to the Church Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje in Old Havana

The Gibara International Film Festival is usually held each April in this Holguin province town.  This film festival was previously known as the Low Budget Film Festival, or the Poor Budget Film Festival.  You’ll find film screenings and live music, possibly debates.  There’s also an award given each year, named for Cuba’s most famous filmmaker, Humberto Solas, which goes to the best of the low-budget films, as he’s famous for making movies on a very low budget.

In Baracoa, the Baracoa culture week celebrates the landing of Antonio Maceo on the beach on April 1, 1895.  This celebration happens in the last week of March/first week of April each year.  You’ll find cultural events, special food events, and festivals.

April 19th is an important date in Cuba.  It’s not a National Holiday, but it is the anniversary of the Victory of the Bay of Pigs, also known as the Battle of Playa Giron.  In 1961, Cuban exiles attempted to invade Cuba but were driven back.  This is a great time to visit the Museum in Playa Giron.
