Avoid non-essential travel to Cuba due to worsening shortages of fuel, electricity, and basic necessities including food, water, and medicine, which can also affect resorts. Fuel availability has decreased, is difficult to predict, and may disrupt ground transportation.
As a result, all Canadian airlines have suspended service to Cuba for upcoming trips. Canadian airlines will facilitate the return of their clients currently in Cuba and are reaching out directly to them. Confirm your return flight details and avoid extending your stay in Cuba.
If you do not have a return ticket, seek a commercial option to leave the country. Commercial flights remain available through international airlines; however, they may become limited on short notice.
11th February 2026: UK FCDO Advises against all but essential travel to Cuba
The UK FCDO states “Cuba is experiencing severe and worsening disruption to essential infrastructure, persistent nationwide power outages and fuel shortages. These conditions significantly affect the ability of visitors to access reliable transport, medical care, communications, and basic services. Authorities have introduced fuel rationing, scaled back public services, and made temporary changes to healthcare, education, transport and tourism operations in order to conserve severely limited energy supplies. Flight schedules are also being disrupted due to aviation fuel shortages, with some airlines reviewing routes or temporarily cancelling services which risk visitors being unable to leave the country.
If you are currently in Cuba, carefully consider if your presence is essential. Take precautions by conserving fuel, water, food and mobile phone charge, and be prepared for significant disruption. Check for messaging from your airline or tour operator.” More here.

7th February 2026: Press Release from Cuban Tourism Ministry.
Here is a copy in its entirety.
Press Release from Cuba Ministry of Tourism!
Cuba ensures the safety and well-being of its visitors. Tourist operations are working as normal.
The hotel infrastructure is energy self-sufficient, thanks to independent power systems and backup generators, which reduce the risks of potential outages. The necessary fuels for his operation have been secured. Similarly, private companies such as rental homes and others have taken steps to reduce the impact of power cuts.
In addition, about 55% of electricity is generated from oil and gas produced in Cuba.
There are about 1,039MW of photovoltaic capacity installed connected to the national power grid and the first battery backup projects are already being installed to store some of the energy produced during the day for night use. This infrastructure continues to expand at a rapid pace with the support of major strategic partners.
The health situation is under control, thanks to the reinforcement of vector control measures. Cuba has once again demonstrated its renowned expertise in managing epidemics and pandemics. Fumigation efforts continue to be active in tourist destinations.
In addition, the supply of food and supplies for the season is guaranteed, following the approval of new importing companies and innovative marketing plans with wholesalers and small and medium private sector businesses. According to surveys conducted by the Cuba Ministry of Tourism and different tour operators, the overall perception of the destination, of visitors during this period has been significantly more positive than last year.
Air operations continue to run smoothly.
Cuba continues to welcome visitors, offering its beautiful beaches and enchanting landscapes, its culture, history, warm climate, the hospitality of its people, and one of the highest security indexes in Latin America.

There’s commentary here from the manager of Los Cactus in Varadero “Varadero is powered by the Energas Varadero power plant. This plant is modern and operated by Canadian company Sherritt. It is powered SOLELY by natural gas produced in Cuba, from Cuban oil wells.
This gas is cleaned and processed in another Sherritt plant in Puerto Escondido, then piped to Varadero produce electricity, and a small amount to Havana for cooking. The remainder of the electricity is sent into the national grid.
What this means is that resorts in Varadero do not rely on imported oil for their electricity. Melia owns its own supply chain company in Cuba, MESOL, which has authorisation to import whatever it needs if it can’t purchase it on the island. Therefore, it is not reliant on Cuban supply chains either. As a vital hard-currency earning and most productive part of the economy, tourism has priority on fuel in case of shortages”

4th August 2025: Driving rental cars in Cuba
Roads were often in poor condition, with lots of big potholes. We drove slowly, both to conserve fuel and also for safety. We did NOT drive at night at all. Our rental car held about 40 litres of fuel, which gave us about 300 miles, we filled up at every opportunity. Sometimes we stopped at multiple stations before fuel was available, or the electricity was out and it couldn’t pump.
20th July 2025: Power situation in Trinidad Cuba
We got power for about 4 hours a day, and walking around the city, it looked like many bars and restaurants were closed. However, they will turn on the generator if you want to go in. Seems sensible, conserving power until they need it. Most casa particulars and restaurants have generators and use them when necessary. Hotels too.
29th May 2025: Melia Cayo Santa Maria Update
It seems to have been downgraded a bit. Only half of the buffet was open and the food selection wasn’t great, but the snack bar was good. I was disappointed that they’re not cooking at the main beach bar, but I guess it is going into the lower season.
17th February 2025: Now three buses a week from Santiago de Cuba to Baracoa
From Santiago de Cuba to Baracoa the small bus tour is now working again. It travels on Weds and Fridays and tickets are through Cubatour. It’s 15 euros one way you have to pay with a bank card. They leave Baracoa at 6:00 am and Santiago at 3:00 pm
Taxis are about 200 euros. Collectivo’s are cheaper. There are usually lots of touts waiting at the bus station to grab tourists. Collectivos from Calle Quattro in town. That is a cheaper option but you have to wait for the taxi / Camion to fill.
10th February 2025:
I’ safely in Varadero & flights & Viazul Bus went as scheduled. I found this Great B&B in a convoluted way, the place is Pelican House. A big room, Kitchen & Bath, really Nice & the people who run. The place couldn’t be more helpful. We are diving at Playa Coral Spectacular! I’m so glad I struggled this far & thanks for your help.
9th February 2025:
Cubans are amazingly punctual. If you ask for breakfast at your casa at 07:00, its there at 07:00!! Taxis arrive on time. Viazul Buses are usually leaving on time, one left 15 minutes late. Cienfuegos a delight. Popular with Cuban (well-off) families on holiday. Prosperous center, even a pedestrianized shopping street (av. 54), streets clean, buildings being repaired, friendly laid back locals.
19th January 2025:
We all know Cubans are going through rough times. How can we help? One of our favorite presents are reading glasses. We can buy them at various dollar stores. Last trip we gave away 50 pairs. We also bring make up items for the ladies. We do a “collective” from everyone we know, asking for unused make up items. We always get more than we can pack. That is why we come home with empty suitcases.
January 17th 2025:
Our bank cards worked (Canadian), but we struggled to find ATMs that didn’t have a line, or had money. TAKE CASH WITH YOU. You get a much better exchange rate that way too! Everywhere we went people wanted paying in cash as a preference. There were some blackouts while we were there, but nothing too difficult. We took a flashlight for walking at night (and waking in the night), and a spare battery pack that we recharged when we could. But it wasn’t a problem.
November 2024:
- The only currency that worked reliably was USD. EUR works fine, but the reality is only USD works all the time, and provides consistent value. Canadian money is accepted, but not at value, or with resistance. We brought all CND cash, with some usd and this was clearly a mistake.
- Using the ATMs is not an option in most of the places we were due to long lineups or no power, or just closed, plus of course, low value.
- Buy Viazul Tickets ahead of time online. Tickets are nearly impossible to buy at the station ( power outages, no connection to the server).

Hello there, I’m absolutely heartbroken to have cancelled a trip to Cuba last Nov. This is the 2nd thwarted trip – the first time it was Iberojet cancelling flights to Havana a year ago.
I called off this one due to the nationwide blackouts (and associated issues of water pumps, in-country travel and food storage). I didn’t want to be the kind of tourist who uses up precious resources the locals need, although, not being wealthy, I was only going to stay in small hotels and airbnbs and eat in paladares and on street. This was a huge dilemma given they people also desperately need tourist dollars.
I guess I’d like to know if there’s any point coming in the next year.
Hello there Roie. I totally understand your concerns. Traveling to Cuba now and staying in local casa particulares, eating in paladares and in the casas and spending your vacation money with the Cuban people would very much help. Cuba has had shortages for about 60 years now and while the electricity blackouts can be a pain, they are manageable. Your visit will definitely help the local community and you’ll add more than you subtract if that makes sense. Sarah
